A kitchen built around a family is not the same as a kitchen built around you.

For years, this kitchen belonged to everybody. Homework at the island, cereal at seven, the whole family in and out the back door. Then one day it got quiet. That is not a loss. That is an opening. Let's design the kitchen for the people who actually live here now.

THE MOMENT

When the kids were home, the kitchen made a thousand small compromises. The finish had to survive backpacks and sippy cups and a teenager who never once used a coaster. The color was whatever was easy. The layout served homework and lunchboxes and a refrigerator covered in everybody's everything. You did not design that kitchen. You survived it, beautifully, for two decades.

Now the last one has moved out. The house is calmer. There is a stillness in the mornings you are still getting used to. And somewhere in the quiet, a thought you have not had room for in years finally has space to land. I would actually love it if this room felt like mine.

That is the empty nester moment, and it is one of the most rewarding chapters we get to be part of. It is not about resale, and it is not about keeping up with anyone. It is about turning a kitchen that served a family into a kitchen that serves a life. The dinners are smaller now and somehow more intentional. The wine gets opened on a Tuesday. The counters are clearer. This is the chapter where the room gets to be designed for you, on purpose, for the first time in a long time.

The good news is the room is ready for it. The bones of your kitchen are almost certainly good. After all these years it is rarely the layout that feels off. It is the finish that absorbed twenty years of family life, and a color that was chosen for durability instead of joy. That is exactly the kind of kitchen we revive.

THE SOLUTION

For most empty nesters, the move is cabinet painting. Your doors and boxes have years of good life left in them. What they need is a flawless, factory-smooth, sprayed finish in a color you choose for no reason other than that you love it. Not the safe color. Not the family color. The one that makes you exhale when you walk in with the groceries.

This is where the chapter change really shows up. We are seeing empty nesters move away from the busy, build-for-a-crowd kitchens of fifteen years ago and toward something calmer and more deliberate. Soft, warm off-whites that glow in the morning. The earth tones that have quietly taken over from millennial gray, the dried-thyme and sage greens, the warm wood accents. A moodier, more grown-up color on the island, because the kids are not going to bang it up anymore and you finally get to be a little bold. We pair every sizable project with a designer, so the color is right for your floors, your light, and your countertops before a single coat goes on. The marriage of the right white and the right accent is what turns a refresh into a transformation.

We will also tell you the truth about what your kitchen needs, which is usually less than people fear. If you like how your kitchen functions and only dislike how it looks, you almost certainly do not need to replace it. Good boxes plus a great finish gets you brand new looking cabinets for a fraction of a remodel.

WHAT WE'D SUGGEST

Here is how we would think about your kitchen, depending on what you are after.

If the style still works and it is the color that has tired, painting is the move, and the most natural fit for this chapter. We keep your doors and drawer fronts, give them a sprayed, factory-smooth finish in the color you have been quietly wanting, and the whole room reads brand new. → /services/cabinet-painting/

If the door style itself feels dated, the raised panels and the arched tops that read as another era, then refacing is the adjacent answer. We keep your good boxes and replace the doors and drawer fronts in a cleaner style like Shaker or our most-requested Artesia, with its beveled edge that reads more custom and lives easier day to day. A brand new kitchen, no remodel. → /services/cabinet-refacing/

If you have always loved that yours are real wood, refinishing brings the natural grain back to life with a fresh stain rather than a paint color. Warm, intentional, and unmistakably the chapter you are in now. → /services/cabinet-refinishing/

And because the house is quieter, this is often the moment to think a little wider than the kitchen. The vanities the kids used. The mudroom that does not need to hold five people's chaos anymore. A built-in or an office now that a bedroom has opened up. We can fold those in while we are already here, and it is the most efficient way to do it.

We encapsulate the kitchen in a plastic bubble with a negative pressure machine that vents outside, so there is no dust, no smell, and no debris reaching the rest of your newly peaceful home. A lot of our empty nesters take a trip while we work and come home to the reveal. Same kitchen. New chapter.

Joe the owner is a pleasure to work with. The quoting process is meticulous and he helped me devise solutions and help me update the condo's look while keeping costs reasonable. Any issues from walkthrough is quickly addressed and Brayan from Joe's crew did a good job painting the various parts of the apartment. Will definitely work with them again and recommend Fulton Revival to anyone looking at painting jobs. Give them a call!

Common questions

Questions we hear most

What areas of Chicago and the suburbs do you serve?
We work within about a 50-mile radius, roughly an hour's drive from our shop in Pilsen at Union and Cermak. That covers all of Chicago and most of the surrounding suburbs, including the North Shore. About half our work is city condos and high-rises (Lincoln Park, Old Town, Gold Coast, River North, River West), the other half suburban homes. Not sure if you're in range? Just ask.
How does your estimate and consultation process work?
It starts with a Cabinet Design Consultation in your home, where we look at your cabinets, talk through what you want to change, and give you an honest read on whether painting, refacing, or refinishing is the right path. From there we move into The Curated Design Session for color and style, then the work itself, and finish with the final reveal. We call the whole arc From Revival to Reveal.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Yes. Every project is backed by our written warranty, and we hand you the full terms in plain English before you sign. Companies waving around 7 to 15 year warranties are usually betting you won't read the exclusions. The best warranty is the one you never have to use, which is why we build the finish to last and stand behind it as the owner, not a call center.
How long does a typical cabinet project take?
Most cabinet sets take about 5 to 10 working days start to finish. We do the boxes in your home (usually 2 to 4 days for a typical kitchen, longer for larger sets), finish the doors and drawer fronts at our shop (3 to 5 days), then come back for a final reinstall day. Refacing runs a bit longer on the install side, since hanging all-new doors and drawer fronts and dialing them in takes more time than rehanging your originals.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We operate as Fulton Revivals LLC, properly licensed for the work we do and fully insured. We can issue a Certificate of Insurance in 24 to 48 hours and add your condo association as additional insured when your building requires it.
How much does it cost to redo my kitchen cabinets?
It depends on a lot of factors, but here's a real starting point. Painting and refinishing typically run $150 to $250 per door and drawer front, and refacing runs $250 to $450 per door and drawer front. Where you land inside those ranges comes down to the specifics: the age and wear of your cabinets, the mechanics and hinge style, the overlay, the size and ceiling height of the kitchen, and any damage like weathering, water, impact, or buildup. Frameless versus face-frame or inset construction matters too, as does the door style and level of detail. We feed all of it into our production rates and price the job down to the penny. For a full breakdown by service, see our cost guide.
Do you do other work besides cabinets?
Cabinets are our specialty: painting, refacing, and refinishing. We also do interior painting, exterior painting, and minor custom carpentry, and we love whole-home projects where we handle the kitchen along with vanities, built-ins, a bar, mudroom, or fireplace surround in one go.
Do you install cabinet hardware?
Yes. We provide and install all hinges and drawer slides, including soft-close upgrades, and we can add trash pull-outs, end panels, and minor custom carpentry. For handles and knobs, you choose and supply them (we'll give you a recommendation list), and they need to be at your home on the first day so we drill the placements correctly.
