Cabinet specialists who understand an Uptown kitchen

Uptown holds one of the densest and most varied sets of early-twentieth-century housing in Chicago, most of it built between about 1900 and 1935 when the elevated line touched off an apartment-building boom. You find greystone two- and three-flats and single-family greystones, the U-shaped brick courtyard buildings that Uptown is known for, classic walk-ups and six-flats, frame and brick workers cottages and Queen Anne houses in Sheridan Park, Prairie School mansions along Hutchinson Street, and Art Deco and Beaux-Arts lakefront high-rises and apartment-hotels, with modern condos layered along the lake.

That range shapes the cabinetry. The vintage courtyard, walk-up, and apartment-hotel condos have often been gut-rehabbed or deconverted, carrying everything from slab doors to 1980s and 1990s oak. The greystones and Prairie houses tend toward stained trim and older wood cabinetry that has fallen out of trend. Either way, these are strong candidates for a painted Shaker, a refaced slab, or another clean, current style. Across all of it, the boxes are usually solid, which makes this painting, refacing, and refinishing territory rather than tear-out territory.

When we take on an Uptown kitchen, whether it is a courtyard-building condo or a Hutchinson Street home, we bring the same in-house finishing and design-first approach, and we handle the logistics your building or association requires, from the certificate of insurance to reserving the freight elevator. We have refaced worn doors into a clean, current style, repainted face-frame cabinets so they read brand new, and brought dated oak back to something warm and intentional.

What homeowners say after the reveal

★★★★★

Joe the owner is a pleasure to work with. The quoting process is meticulous and he helped me devise solutions and help me update the condo's look while keeping costs reasonable. Any issues from walkthrough is quickly addressed and Brayan from Joe's crew did a good job painting the various parts of the apartment. Will definitely work with them again and recommend Fulton Revival to anyone looking at painting jobs. Give them a call!

Joe and his team at Fulton Revivals were excellent and we are extremely pleased with the interior paint work done throughout our condo. They were professional and timely - communicating to us throughout the project. Joe had the team out quickly after project completion to address minor touch-ups post walk-through. Highly recommend and will utilize Fulton Revivals services for future work.

Uptown questions

Frequently asked

Do you do cabinet work in Uptown condos and vintage flats?
Yes, and it is a big part of what we do. Courtyard-building condos, walk-ups, greystone flats, and lakefront high-rises are all everyday work, and we coordinate building access and provide a certificate of insurance when required.
Can you restore the original built-ins in my greystone?
Yes. We restore and finish period built-ins, butler's pantries, and millwork so a refreshed kitchen still feels true to the age and detail of the home.
Do the landmark district rules affect my kitchen?
No. Hutchinson Street, Dover Street, and Uptown Square are Chicago Landmark districts, but preservation review applies to exterior changes only. Interior cabinet work is never subject to review.
Should I paint or reface my condo cabinets?
Both work well. Painting keeps your doors and gives them a new finish, while refacing replaces the doors and drawer fronts and transforms the look. Refacing is a popular choice in condos where a full remodel is impractical.
Can you work while we still live in the unit?
Yes. We seal the kitchen off with plastic and run a negative pressure machine vented outside, so dust and odor stay contained. You keep access to the essentials during the in-home days.
