Ukrainian Village is one of the city's most intact late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century streetscapes, built out largely between the 1880s and the 1920s. The worker's cottages went up first, with most of the two- and three-flats following around the turn of the century. Walk any block and you see brick worker's cottages, Chicago-style two- and three-flats, greystones, Italianate homes, ornamented Queen Anne flats, frame cottages, and the occasional high-style single-family house, with only a light scatter of modern infill. It is a neighborhood that has kept its bones.

Unrehabbed cottages and flats often still have older oak that has fallen out of trend, while many two-flats and condo-converted flats are ready for an update. Both are strong candidates for a painted Shaker or an inset style that sits comfortably with the vintage millwork these homes are known for.
